  Chapter One

“Jake, I want to talk to you before you go out tonight. Stick around.”

  “Sure, Dad; what's up?”

“I just want to make sure that you know what's going down tonight. You need to keep it together, and that means being prepared.”

“We’re going to pick up some drugs and move them somewhere else in little increments for profit. Same shit, different day.”

“You're also going to handle the money tonight.”

  “You're not going?”

Jake was a little surprised that his father wasn't going on the run. He always went if there was money to be picked up. Dean did not trust anybody else with the money. Until now. He should have felt good about that distinction.

“No, not this time. I told you before that it's time for you to start taking over. I meant it. So, you're going to meet with Jack, pick up the money, and then get the product where it needs to be. And don't call it drugs, Jake; that makes us sound like criminals. It’s product.”

Jake agreed with his adamant father, but he didn't care what it was called. As long as it kept bringing in the club money, that's all that mattered. The Rebel Bears needed the funds.

“All right, Dad. I will grab the product, get the money; is there anything else that you need?”

“No, Jake, just watch your six. You're going to take Donovan with you. He has been with me several times and knows Jack Krensky good enough. He will try to get over on you. It's just the way he is. You need to make sure that you count all the money.”

“If you don't trust him, why do you do business with him in the first place?”

Dean smiled. “You learn very quickly that on the top, you can't trust anybody.”

Jake didn't like the sound of that. He was first in line to become the next alpha and leader of the clan. He told himself that he would do things differently, and he planned on it.

His father was always suspicious of everyone, sure that most people were out to get him. Jake wanted to lead with trust and to let people show him their true sides. He wanted to believe that most people were good and would do the right thing.

“I hope that isn't true, Dad.”

“Sadly, it is. Now be careful tonight.”

That made Jake stop for a second. His father had never told him to be careful before. Was there something that he didn't know about that was going to happen? Jake was about to ask, but then he stopped himself. If there was something going on, his father figured that he could handle it. Jake wouldn't put it past him to try to teach him a lesson again. Everything that happened with his dad was a lesson.

Jake was about to leave, but his father had more to say to him. “Have you thought about what else we talked about before? About your future obligations?”

Jake didn't have to ask what his dad was talking about. He already knew. It was another thing that he was supposed to be doing. Not only was he supposed to be learning the business, so that he could take over eventually, but he was also supposed to be finding a mate.

Most leaders were not given the title until they were settled and settled meant that he needed a mate. His father seemed to think that it was like going down to the grocery store—he could just pick one up. Jake did not find it that easy. Apparently, he was a bit pickier than he was supposed to be.

“Yes, I have thought about it. I just think you are overestimati
ng how quickly that can happen. It's not like I can just pick one out of a lineup and live happily ever after. I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works.”

“No, but there are always girls around you, all the time, son. I know that you do not have any trouble finding them, so why does it have to be so complicated?”

“Because even though I have plenty of girlfriends, it doesn't mean that I want to actually be with any of them. Not like that anyway.”

“It doesn't have to be forever. It's not like you can't pick up a mistress or something if you want a change of scenery. Just because you guys are together doesn't mean that you have to actually be together. A lot of times, marriages between leaders and their families are only there to give them an advantage. It doesn't have to be about emotions at all. It’s probably better when it’s not.”

  “What about love?”

  “What about it?”

Jake pressed his lips together and tried not to say anything. That was exactly how his father had felt about his mother, and since his mother was dead now, Jake didn't like to think about her in that way. He hoped that she had found some happiness in her life because it certainly had not been with her husband. Jake hoped that he and his brothers had been enough to keep her going until the end. His father had always been quite dismissive of his mother, and it always bothered him, even when he was young.

“Me and you have a different outlook on it. I do not want to just marry somebody because of their family or title. I want to feel something for the woman I marry.”

Dean waved off his son like he was being a child about it.

“You can feel whatever you want with the mistress. Trust me when I tell you that it is better to marry for breeding than for any other reason. Good blood makes good children, and that keeps our bloodline secure.”

Jake wanted to wave him off, but he knew that it would be disrespectful. He had to sit and listen to it, even though he had heard it over and over again. His father was basically going to bring it up continuously until he finally did what he wanted. That's how his dad did things.

Jake just nodded his head like he agreed with him, or at least like he understood. He understood that it was the old ways, and those ways weren't going to get the clan very far. The Rebel Bears were not just a motorcycle gang; they were an old bear-shifter clan and had been run by a Halstead for a very long time. It did not matter if Jake was married or not: he would still be the leader soon enough.

All he had to do was shut his mouth until then. That was easier said than done when it came to any dealings he had with Dean.

  Chapter Two

Jake was nervous about the run. It wasn't because he hadn't gone on a million of them before, and it wasn't like he was worried about something going wrong. He felt like a huge change was coming. He could feel it in his bones, something that was going to change the trajectory of his life forever.

There was no cause for such a momentous feeling. All Jake knew for certain was it would be the first run that his father wasn't breathing down his neck about the money. That in and of itself was a miracle, but that wasn't the change. If Jake would have known what it was, then maybe he would have been able to figure out how to deal with it. At the moment, it was just the feeling in the pit of his stomach that didn't want to go away.

His brother Donovan was with him. Donovan was the second oldest of the Halstead brothers, and he was well-versed because while Jake was going to other motorcycle gangs to learn new techniques, Donovan was riding shotgun with his dad. Even though Jake was the oldest and he was in line to take the title of Alpha, a lot of people thought that it would have been Donovan. Everyone believed that if Dean had his choice, it would be a second born that he would pick. Donovan was the most like Dean.

“What's the matter with you, Jake? Are you scared or something?”

Jake waved him off and told him to stop being an idiot.

“Of course, I’m not afraid. I just got a strange feeling, man.”

  “Like a sense?”

Jake shook his head. He didn't have a sense that something was going to go wrong. He just couldn't put his finger on it, and he didn't want to try to explain it to Donovan. Everything he said went back to his dad, and his indecision was not something that he wanted to spread any tales about. They already thought he was lacking.

“Nothing like that. Just feeling weird, that's all. It probably has nothing to do with tonight. This is just another pick-up. This isn't my first rodeo.”

Jake felt like he had to prove himself to not just his father, but his brother as well. Jake hated to feel the distance that had grown between him and his brother. It was clear that his father had a favorite, and Donovan was it. That had caused a lot of issues between the two.

“That's good to hear, Jake. I don't like going in with a heavy head. It never turns out well.”

He assured Donovan that it was nothing like that. He really did have a lot on his mind, but of course, he wasn't going to share that with him either. Donovan was like a stone wall and nobody talked to him about feelings. The rest of the brothers wondered if Donovan even had any.

They rode in silence for a little while, and it was Donovan that was driving. Jake was trying to see it as a perk, that he didn't have to drive around like a grunt, but he knew that it was his brother’s controlling traits that were coming out instead. Donovan didn't want him driving because he didn't think that he drove well enough. So, of course, he had to take over himself.

The more Jake thought about everything, the more frustrated he got. He was the one in line to be Alpha, not Donovan. He shouldn't be feeling this way, but he knew that it was his father that brought the friction between the two brothers.

“Do you think we have anything to worry about tonight?”

Donovan shook his head. “No. This guy is pretty straightforward. He always has the money on mark, and I don't think it'll be a problem. He knows that I'll be there, so he's not going to try anything.”

Jake tried not to let his words get to him. He was making it like the guy would get over on him if Donovan weren't there. Jake tried to ignore the aggravation that came with talking with his brother. It had been that way between them for years. His brother used to look up to him, and then something happened. Maybe it was Donovan that wanted to take over Jake’s place. He really didn't know.

Everything went just as it was supposed to go—at first. Jake and Donovan picked up the money. Jake was pushed aside and his brother treated him like he was ridiculous when he said he had to count it.

Jake knew that his dad asked him to do it, and he knew that it was for a reason. Maybe he just wanted to know if he would be able to maintain the pressure that was put on him while he was counting it. All eyes were on him, and people were getting itchy. Jake was looking like he didn’t trust Jack, even though the man had done business with the gang for years.

“Your father knows that I always come with the right amount of money.”

“He also asked me to count it. That's what I'm going to do. If you know my father well enough, you know that he likes things done a certain way. Why make it more complicated than it has to be?”

Jake was a little on edge, and it wasn't because of the armed men around him. It was because of Donovan there, watching every step he took. He felt like his father had sent him to keep an eye on Jake, and Jake did not like the idea of that at all.

When they finally got all the money counted and the product loaded, Jake was ready to get out of there and away from Donovan. He was just too smug, too cocky, too much like his father, and Jake was not in the mood for it. He still had a weird feeling.

Donovan was riding next to him. Apparently, he wasn't too worried about the way Jake drove anymore. Donovan must have seen something in his eyes because he didn't argue with him about it. For once.

“Are you going to take Crystal or are you going down Second out of here?”

  “Does it matter?”

“Not really, but we've been having some trouble with
people down on Crystal Ave. I think there is a new clan trying to move in. Dad has talked with the elders about it, but he isn't sure what he wants to do yet. I don't want us to get into it with them. We're not ready to start something yet. We’ve got to wait for Dad to say the word.”
